Vine Recording Collective
A place for artists to record calmly, quietly, and therapeutically on analog tape
Hi Friends! Vine Recording Co. is a pseudo-label operating out of my sound-therapy office at Atlantic Theatres. Recording on a borrowed Tascam 388 reel-to-reel in a slow, loving manner, I helps artists to tap into their deepest well-being, sing from the heart, and make music that will heal the world. My passion to help artists stems from my own difficulties through a ten year career of songwriting, recording, and touring. Iām looking for folks to work with in 2024, if you are interested please email corey@beachesvineyard.net.
Recording begins with a singing-bowl session to help us relax and get our minds/hearts/breath in tune. So often recording is plagued by a sense of urgency. By slowing down and making sure we are resonating positively, we make recordings that will go out and resonate positively in the world. This is science, the law of vibration! This is not a ārealā label and there is no marketing or promoting that will happen from my end. Think the Trader Joeās of the music business (they donāt advertise). Ultimately, the outcome of what happens to your recorded music has very little to do with how satisfying or worth making it is. As an artist, you will find your greatest success and happiness by learning to love the process of creation. That is our reward.
I started recording on Tascam equipment 8 years ago, and am incredibly grateful to now be working on the mother of all home-recording machines, the Tascam 388. This machine sounds magical, all you have to do is prop up a few mics and give it your all and you are instantly transported to the golden age of recording. There are of course some limitations to working in this way. Most music that is created in the modern world is edited down to the micro-second. A little part can be punched in over and over until it is technically āperfectā but I believe something gets lost in that process. At Vine Recording Co we focus on full passes, creating parts that are playable and enjoyable and accurately reflect what we really sound like. Weāve all been to the gig where the artist doesnāt sound as good as the record right? Do we really want all our music to be replaced by computers? Maybe the technology has gotten more efficientā¦and of course there is gorgeous music that is created in a digital formatā¦but limiting ourselves to this analog is a small act of rebellion to the A.I. age. Letās return to the source, to the healing power of music, to the groove of our own heartbeat!
I also believe that our well-being as a species would be greatly benefitted if artists and sound-engineers committed to making music (live and in studio) more quietly. Songs can still carry so much energy without needing to be loud. The average concert happens at 100-105 decibels. You are only able to be exposed to sounds of 105 decibels for 8 minutes A WEEK without causing serious damage to your ears (and nervous system). Anxiety is over-stimulation. In our sessions we will explore ways to make our songs gentler and truer to the spirit of how they were created. Iām not a complete stick in the mud, I love a good rock nā roll tune occasionallyā¦but I do think we should turn all our amps down a little. :)
I am the first artist on the roster, and am preparing to release a bunch of music created on this machine, in this calm way. Iāve learned SO much since recording this, but here is one example of the sound. Thanks for reading, drop a line if youāve got a song in your heart. Iād be honored to help you bring it into the world, and believe together we can create in a way that is deeply healing for ourselves and our listeners.
Sincerely,
Corey Kilgannon
